I have worked in retail for the same company for 4 years come December, and for the past year and a half I have had a set schedule of coming in at 7:30 Monday – Friday. The time I get off varies but I’m focusing on the fact that I have to be to work at 7:30AM every day and that I’m not a morning person. You would think that after working this schedule for over a year I’d have adjusted but no, there are many days where I get up with just enough time to get there and I’m yawing for the first couple of hours at my desk struggling to keep my eyes open… The unusual thing is that I seem to adjust well when I get asked to come in earlier i.e. 6 or 6:30AM, I don’t understand it but for some reason it’s not quite as hard for me to get out of bed. Perhaps there is a time sweet spot for me? I personally used to like going in at 9AM when I had my last job a few years ago, it wasn’t too early or too late and I could still get off in time to catch the news and any primetime TV shows I was worried about missing. I feel as though my issue with getting up early is partly to blame on the fact that I’m a night owl… meaning that even if I have to get up for 4AM I struggle to go to bed before midnight and even when I attempt to go to bed earlier I usually end up staring at the ceiling or the wall for hours.

However, this morning I decided to try to make myself get up about 45 minutes earlier than usual. I did hit snooze a few times, but I set the alarm in anticipation for such and it actually worked quite well for me. I got to  enjoy sitting up and checking my Google+ notifications before rushing out of bed and had the opportunity to enjoy a long hot shower, it was bliss. And with living only about 7 minutes away from my job, I managed to stop at Starbucks for coffee and a bagel and have time to sit in my car and eat it before clocking into work a few minutes early. I don’t feel grumpy, I don’t feel sleepy… I feel great to be honest. I do realize that there will be days when I sleep terribly and don’t want to get up early but I’m going to see how long I can keep up with this whole getting up an hour and a half before work thing.

I used to think my parents were crazy for getting up at the crack of dawn, with time to drink their coffee and watch news and what not… but it really does help you get ready for your day. I like feeling like this!

    Rachel, I do this every single day. If I have to be somewhere or get on a call at 9am, I will have been up since at least 7am. One hour is to get ready and do the morning routine a man must do, or else! The second hour is for me to relax, read news, or sit idle in my own thoughts. I’m far from a morning person and greatly prefer not to interact with anyone for at least an hour after awakening so this really helps. Plus, being up early, often before anyone else, lets me get my coffee in near solitude with no traffic, no lines, no chit-chat, nor anything else particularly annoying. Great way to start!
